Engineer gains practical AI knowledge through course with ALS聽

The last few years have seen the rollout and development of AI technologies reach new heights.聽Not just in terms of what聽these tools聽can now do but in the widespread uptake by聽many聽鈥 including businesses.聽

In response to this ALS,聽in聽partnership with the British Computer Society, has developed and is delivering the BCS Foundation Certificate in聽Artificial聽Intelligence. The course equips learners with a聽better聽understanding of聽generative聽AI聽tools, how AI can be applied in a professional setting, and awareness of聽its聽possible聽ethical and legal聽challenges.聽聽聽聽聽聽

One learner who has completed the certificate is Alfie Healy.聽

Alfie currently works聽as a DevOps and Automation Engineer, a role that聽requires a firm grasp of聽efficiency, and problem-solving.聽Day-to-day, his work focuses on reducing manual effort across multiple business functions by designing and building internal tools and automated workflows.聽His technical toolkit spans Python and PowerShell, Microsoft聽365聽and Azure integrations, and increasingly, AI-enabled solutions that support smarter and more scalable operations.聽

鈥淚鈥檝e already been building automation and starting to work more closely with AI tools,鈥 he explained.聽鈥淏ut I wanted a structured understanding of AI beyond just 鈥榟ow to make it work鈥.鈥澛燫ather than focusing purely on experimentation, Alfie wanted clarity on what AI聽actually is, how it should be used, and how organisations should think about adopting it responsibly.聽That鈥檚聽what led him to the course.聽

鈥淭he BCS Foundation Certificate in AI helped me understand how AI fits into real business systems, not just technically, but responsibly,鈥澛爃e聽added. This directly supported his current responsibilities, particularly as he became more involved in designing and implementing AI-driven automation.聽The course content around AI lifecycle, risk,聽governance聽and ethical use have聽been especially relevant, as these considerations are critical when deploying AI聽in his work.聽

“The sections on responsible AI, bias, risk, and governance were聽also聽particularly valuable,鈥澛爃e added.聽These topics reframed AI for him as something that requires boundaries and oversight, especially when embedded into operational workflows that affect real people and processes.聽

Since completing the course, Alfie had been able to apply its principles聽to聽his role.聽聽

鈥淲hen building or experimenting with AI features, I now think more carefully about data quality, transparency, user impact, and whether an AI solution is actually appropriate for the problem,鈥澛爃e said.聽聽

The qualification has聽also strengthened his ability to communicate complex AI concepts to colleagues.聽This has聽been particularly valuable when discussing risk, safety, and suitability with stakeholders who may not have a technical background.聽

鈥淭he support from ALS has been聽very good. The materials were clear, well structured, and easy to engage with alongside a full-time role,鈥澛燗lfie said.聽鈥淚鈥檇聽recommend it to anyone who wants to work with AI in a professional setting, not just experiment with it.聽聽

鈥淢y goal聽now聽is to continue developing as an AI & Automation Engineer, with a focus on building practical AI solutions that improve operational efficiency and reliability.鈥澛犅
